Pacific Herring Spawn 2025

The Pacific Herring spawn happens off the eastern shores of Vancouver Island each March. At this time, the herring come close to shore to lay their eggs, bringing a plethora of wildlife through the food chain with them. Eagles, sea lions and orcas are all drawn to the area. Fishermen work around the clock to fill their quotas, adding more chaos to the feeding frenzy. The fertilization of the eggs causes the water to turn a brilliant turquoise colour while the spawn is active, providing yet another interesting element to the mix. In short, it’s a photography geek’s dream.

This was my fourth year documenting the spawn, as it’s become a personal project that I add to each year. Here are a few photos from this year, including some taken while out on the water with my friends at Wild Waterways Adventures.
